Do You Have Enough Land?

For a typical 7–8 kW ground-mount array you need roughly 500–700 sq ft of open, unshaded ground — a patch about 25 ft by 25 ft. More system means more space, and it scales close to linearly:

Two things matter more than raw acreage. Orientation and tilt: south-facing, tilted at roughly your latitude, gives the best year-round production — and with a ground mount you get to choose, instead of being stuck with whatever direction your roof faces. Shading: a half-acre with trees to the south can be worse than a small clear patch. Unshaded from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. is what counts.

How Far From the House Can It Be?

This is the single most common question we get, so here's a proper answer. The constraint is voltage drop — the longer the wire run, the more energy is lost as heat along the way. Installers design to keep that loss under roughly 2–3%. The fix for a longer run is simply thicker wire, which costs more per foot. It's a solved engineering problem, not a dealbreaker.

But distance isn't the main cost driver — trenching is. You're digging a trench from the array back to the house to run conduit underground, and what's in the ground decides the price. Trenching runs roughly $5–$12 per linear foot in normal soil; soft, sandy soil is at the low end, while hard clay, tree roots, or ledge rock push it up fast. Crossing a driveway means boring or cutting under it — directional boring runs about $10–$30 per linear foot for that stretch. Route matters: going around an obstacle can be cheaper than through it. Do You Have to Own the Property?

Yes — for both roof and ground mount. A solar system is a 25-year asset physically attached to real estate. Whoever finances it — a lender, or the company that owns a leased/PPA system — protects their investment by filing a UCC fixture filing or a lien tied to the property. You can't put that kind of long-term encumbrance on land you don't own.

Ground mount adds a few wrinkles worth flagging early: land and home owned by different people (common with family parcels), trusts or joint ownership where everyone on the deed usually has to sign, and easements or deed restrictions that limit structures on part of the lot. Renting? You generally can't put in your own system, but community solar — where available in your state — lets you get solar savings without owning anything.

Permits, Setbacks, and Zoning

Most zoning codes treat a ground mount as a structure — like a shed or a deck — which means it's a separate permit track from a rooftop system. Setbacks: towns require the array to sit a certain distance from your property lines, and that distance varies locally; it can rule out a spot that otherwise looks perfect. Wind load: exposed sites like ridgelines or open fields sometimes trigger an engineering review. The best move is to ask your town's building department early, before the system is designed around a spot you can't actually use.

Ground-Mount Solar for Manufactured / Mobile Homes

If an installer told you they "don't do mobile homes," they were almost certainly talking about the roof — and ground mount often sidesteps the whole problem. Installers decline manufactured-home roofs for a few reasons: lighter truss construction (panels add roughly 3–4 lbs per sq ft plus wind loading, and many manufactured-home roofs aren't built for it), titling (manufactured homes are often titled as personal property rather than real property, which complicates financing), and metal roof seams that are hard to attach to without risking leaks.
